Description

Description of the scanner

The outer dimensions of the scanner are 36 × 87 × 62 cm. Slight curves of the lid with two embedded blue acrylic panes support the self-contained shape of the device. The casual “JAZZ” lettering, which is emblazoned in bright blue and orange on the front case, is really striking. The scanner can be connected in just a few simple steps: setting the correct ID number, plugging in the power and SCSI cables, removing the transport locks - and the device is ready for use. For smooth and uncomplicated installation, Scitex has included multilingual manuals and a trilingual training CD with the delivery.

To use EverSmart Jazz, you need a Power Mac with PCI bus and at least System 8.1. At least 64 MB of RAM should be available for the scanning software. A monitor with a diagonal of at least 17 inches and a color depth of 24 bits is required to assess and coordinate the scans. Where to set up and use the scanner, you should carefully consider in advance, since the operating noise of the fan unit is quite annoying in the long run, not to mention the actual scanning operation. A spatial separation from the actual workplaces is recommended and possible, since the device can work fully automatically after setting the scan parameters, even if several templates are to be recorded at once.

Transparent originals can be captured up to a thickness of 5 mm. Even with framed slides, the optics adjust to the original distance from the glass surface.

XY technique for pixel hunting

With the XY technology from Scitex, the originals are not scanned line by line with the CCD diodes, but controlled directly as in the coordinate system. Every pixel, even in the peripheral areas, is scanned as optical signals by thousands of tiny diodes and converted into electrical signals. These are then sent to the processing unit. The color depth achieved with this technique is 42 bits, which means a color depth of 14 bits per color.

With its optical system, EverSmart Jazz provides a maximum physical resolution of 2,000 × 6,000 dpi - thanks to XY technology - on the entire scanning area, not just in the middle. Unlike many other XY scanners, the EverSmart also offers the option of strip scanning (stitch scanning), so that the maximum resolution is available even with A3-format originals. The density range of the scanner is 3.7 D, the color depth is 14 bits per channel.

Professional standards

When it comes to scanning software, Scitex, as a specialist in the graphics industry, can look back on many years of experience, and after just a few minutes of the software, the professional claim with which the EverSmart software appears is apparent. After the prescan, the recorded data can be called up in a small gallery window, examined individually and provided with the respective scan parameters. Correcting color errors, removing too much or too little color in the image is the task of the software. A «Smart Set» function helps to automatically set the scan parameters for an image correctly based on predefined motif types (people, outdoor, metal or still life), so that an absolutely pressure-ready and balanced scan quality can be achieved practically at the push of a button. If necessary, you can also define your own motif types and save them for later use.

Tummelfeld for professionals

The various possibilities for manual correction that are available in the scanning software require a greater wealth of experience in dealing with digital image material. It is helpful that the effects of all settings can be made immediately visible on the monitor - also separately for the individual color separations. In the correction dialogs, however, it would sometimes be desirable to work a little more fluently. In principle, however, editing the prescans achieves a level of perfection that greatly reduces the need to make corrections in the image editing software.

To increase productivity, EverSmart can scan multiple originals - for example, up to 69 35mm slides - in one pass. First, the prescans are made, which are then checked and corrected one after the other. Once the scan parameters have been defined for all originals, you start the fine scanning process, which runs fully automatically. Scitex states that with a template size of 6 × 7 cm per hour, approximately twenty CMYK images can be produced with a scaling of 250 percent and an output resolution of 300 dpi. The desired tonal value corrections or color transformations are carried out immediately with the scanning process.
